Two-factor authentication when sending files

Updated over 3 weeks ago

When you send files through Filemail and set a password, you can choose how that password is delivered to your recipients. Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of security by sending one-time password via SMS or email. Below is a quick guide to what each option means and how it works:

How it works

  • Password delivery

    When you protect a file with a password, Filemail will automatically send that password to each recipient before they download or access the file.

  • Fallback behavior

    If you choose SMS but Filemail cannot find a mobile number for a recipient in your Address Book, the system will default to sending the password via email and let you know that happened.

How to enable

  1. Scroll down to the Two-factor authentication when sending files section.

  2. Select None, SMS, or Email.

    1. None - no password is sent. Recipients enter the password manually (when you’ve shared it separately) and access the file normally;

    2. SMS (NOK 1.5 per SMS) - Filemail sends the password by text message to each recipient’s mobile phone as long as it is assigned to the recipient in your Address Book. Otherwise, Filemail will switch to email delivery and notify you.

    3. Email - the password is emailed directly to each recipient’s inbox.

  3. Click Save.
